Advanced Technology in an Easy-to-Install, Plug-In Design
Designed for home use, the Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk is a UL-listed, A/C-powered, plug-in alarm that utilizes sophisticated electronic components and sensor technology to protect you and your family from the dangers of CO, methane, and propane exposure. It plugs directly into a standard A/C outlet and includes a 9-volt battery backup that provides continuous monitoring--even during power outages.

The Dangers of Carbon Monoxide, Methane, and Propane Exposure
The leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in North America, carbon monoxide (CO) is often referred to as the silent killer because it's odorless, tasteless, and invisible. Carbon monoxide poisoning can come about via a number of sources, including everyday items and appliances in your home or office. And because symptoms of CO poisoning mimic the flu or other common illnesses it can often go undiagnosed.

Likewise, methane and propane gases are commonly used in homes for cooking, heating, and water heating. Although it happens rarely, gas leaks can sometimes occur inside the home, increasing the risk of fire or explosion.

Audible Alarm Pattern Alerts you to Elevated CO and Gas Levels
When placed on every level of your home, alarms like the KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk can help protect everyone in the house by giving you an unmistakable signal when gas levels have reached an unhealthy point. If unhealthy levels of CO are detected, the alarm will emit four quick audible beeps every five seconds until either levels decrease or the reset button is pressed. If methane gas or propane gas is detected, the alarm will emit beeps every other second with "GAS" shown in the display.

Easy-to-Read Digital Display Shows CO Levels
The KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk is preferred among traditional CO and explosive gas alarms because of its digital display. This display clearly shows levels of CO that the unit has detected and stored-- from 30 to 999 ppm--and it updates every 15 seconds to indicate any abrupt changes or alarming trends. The display also shows the peak CO level recorded by the alarm since it was last reset or unplugged. The continuous display also shows if gas is present.

LED Shows Sensor Status
With the KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk, you never have to wonder if the sensor is functioning properly. A blinking dot in the lower right-hand corner of the display denotes normal operation, so you can trust that it's working. In addition, you can test alarm function by pressing the test/reset button at any time to verify that the horn and electric circuitry are operating properly.

Convenient Mounting Options
The KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk has a low-profile design that makes it suitable for any room in your home. The detector can be plugged into any standard A/C outlet; it's plug can be snapped into the back of the unit and can be rotated so the alarm remains vertical, independent of whether the electrical socket is mounted vertically or horizontally. In addition, the alarm comes with a 6-foot extension cord, so the unit can be plugged into the wall outlet and then placed on a table or shelf. For the most thorough protection, place an alarm on every level of your home.

The UL-listed Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk has a seven-year life and is backed by a five-year limited warranty.

5 out of 5 stars This Is A Great Gadget If Enjoyed Properly   December 6, 2009

We began experiencing false alarms with this gadget at a disturbing rate. At first, we panicked, believing that our lives might be in jeopardy at the time of each alarm. After "airing" the gadget out, we reset and reinstalled the gadget several times but it continued to give GAS alarms. Finally, we went online and read the reviews of this gadget and learned of its propensity to give "false alarms". Particularly helpful was the family that reported that they had lovingly renamed the gadget their "FBT" - short for the "Fart Beepy Thing". That gave us the idea for how to realize the true value of our very own FBT.

If you walk by the gadget and let one rip (i.e. backfire or blow mud), the gadget will go off in anywhere from 10-60 seconds and begin flashing the GAS alert. The length of time it takes to set the alarm off depends upon the severity of the individual air biscuit that was released. From our experience, Sloppy Joe mud ducks are far worse than cheap beer stink bombs. The best part is that, after setting off the alarm, you can then press one of the buttons and the gadget will quantify your stink burger, giving you a numerical rating of the severity of the blast. From our experience, a 200 level rip reflects a modest beer blast, while a 218 level reflects a much more serious effort. So far, the best exterminator we have been able to register was a 221 beauty that surely resulted in a clothing change. Just think of all the party and gaming opportunities this gadget presents. It is well worth the price of purchase as a party activity.

By the way, this gadget probably sucks as a life saving device because you have no way of distinguishing a routine doggy blaster from a more serious Natural Gas leak. We think a caged parakeet may be more reliable in this regard. When it stops chirping, you know to get the hell out of your house.

5 out of 5 stars It saved my home!   June 21, 2006

Few weeks ago, at 3:30 AM the Gas Alarm was triggered. When I opened my bedroom's door, a strong gas smell was all over the place, immediatly I closed the gas tube main valvle of my apartment. If it weren't for the alarm that awaked us, my maid, me or my dog could be death and maybe other persons from my building as well. I live in the Dominican Republic and 99% of our homes use gas stoves, and I consider this a must. It's a reliable and well designed product, it even has a back up batteries system using 4 AA batteries, so it's always on, even with power blackouts.

We got this to replace another detector (that didn't detect the unlit stove filling the air with gas).
Our propane delivery man recommended anything with Nighthawk technology, saying that technology was much better than the others. This covers propane, natural gas, and carbon monoxide. It plugs right into a wall outlet, so you don't have to mount it anywhere. It also has a battery for power outages and other nice features.
I find it comforting that other reviewers said it alarms when hair spray or shellac are in the air. It sounds like it covers even more explosive gases than it claims on the package.
I've not been around propane stoves, hot water heaters, etc. for some years, so I wanted some reassurance of our safe use of these.

5 out of 5 stars No false alarms, just sensitive   October 30, 2005

I use this one in my kitchen. If I forget to turn on the exhaust fan before heating up the oven, I can see the numbers climb in the readout. For safety equipment, I think sensitivity is a virtue.

A friend was having headaches for months during the heating season and finally learned that her CO alarm had such a high thresh-hold that it missed the sub-lethal doses of CO the faulty furnace was putting out. Better safe than sorry.

And isn't most hairspray a "toxic gas," or close enough to one to think twice about using it in an unventilated space? I find the idea of it detecting such gases quite comforting.

5 out of 5 stars This Product Saved Our Lives - Never had a false alarm!   October 30, 2007

This product was recommended to us by the gas company for a number of reasons. First, CO detectors alone do not pick up natural gas and not everyone's nose works well enough to detect natural gas in the middle of the night should that ever occur. Second, it plugs-in with a 9V battery back-up should you lose power or accidentally become unplugged. So, when it goes off, it flashes CO levels or GAS if it's gas - and you know it is not a false alarm. It also saves the peak level - so when gas, fire and rescue show up - they know you haven't dreamed it up or lost your mind.

I am grateful to the gas man that recommended this product to me. A year later, it saved the lives of myself and my two kids. An old oven in our apartment started venting gas - and the gas men stayed for four hours until they found the leak. They knew that with this detector - there was a problem.

They explained had it been anything else on just a battery or without the digital readout - they probably would have assumed it was a fluke, battery problem, etc and just gone on. When you open all the windows and doors to vent out gas - by the time the gas people get there, there's nothing for their meters to pick up. Plus, they get so many false alarms on fire detectors and co detectors, that is what they will often assume if they don't pick anything up. This is the same thing the gas man a year ago had said when he recommended this product.

It does the job. We're living proof!
