Amazon.com Product Description
No need to worry about faulty batteries with the Kidde KN-SMFM-i Silhouette Low-Profile Smoke Alarm. This no-fuss alarm contains a rechargeable battery that runs off central electricity and lasts the lifetime of the unit. Dependable and easy to install, this no-maintenance alarm saves on labor and material costs over its lifetime. And because this alarm is interconnect-able, builders and do-it-yourself homeowners will quickly discover this is a must-have for remodels and new construction.

This alarm uses ionization sensing technology. Ionization sensing alarms may detect invisible fire particles (associated with flaming fires) sooner that photoelectric alarms. Photoelectric sensing alarms may detect visible particles (associated with smoldering fires) sooner than ionization alarms. Kidde strongly recommends that both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms be installed to help insure maximum detection of the various types of fire that can occur within the home.

Rechargeable Batteries Save Money, Time, and Labor
The Kidde Silhouette Low-Profile Smoke Alarm features a rechargeable lithium battery sealed inside the unit that recharges automatically via central electricity. If there is a power outage, the battery will recharge once the electricity is restored. Over the span of the alarm's life, this no-fuss unit saves homeowners money, time, and labor on battery changes. For builders, landlords, hoteliers, and apartment managers, this innovative feature cuts down on callbacks, material, and labor costs.

The battery is designed to last the lifetime of the alarm, approximately 10 years. Once the alarm has reached the end of its life, it will chirp every 30 seconds, letting you know it's time for a replacement.

An interconnected system provides more warnings in more places in case of fire in your home.
Easy-to-Install Alarm Features a Discreet Profile
The Silhouette alarm's face plate protrudes less than half an inch from the ceiling, making it the most discreet alarm on the market. The encasement containing the sensor and components fits into most round, square, and octagon electrical boxes with 3-1/2-inch hole spacing and a depth of at least 2-1/8 inches. The unit is also compatible with double-gang electrical boxes. Do-it-yourselfers will appreciate the pre-stripped wiring harness, which eliminates the need for a stripper tool, and the tinned strands that increase conductivity and wire nut grip. Once the smoke alarm is installed, simply make sure the unit receives AC power for 24 hours to fully charge the battery.

Interconnect-able for Improved Safety
Fire and consumer experts recommend interconnected alarms for added protection. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), most Americans feel they are more at risk of being a victim of a tornado than of a house fire. Actually the opposite is true. Fires are more common than any other disaster that strikes a family at home, and can become deadly in minutes.

You have on average less than three minutes from the time you hear a smoke alarm to escape a fire. The sooner you hear an alarm, the sooner you can get out safely. Smoke alarms that link together so that when one goes off, they all go off, are called interconnected alarms. These alarms provide more warnings in more places, giving your family more time to escape a house fire. Houses built after 1993 are required by building codes to have interconnected alarms that are wired into their electrical system.

Thankfully, Silhouette alarms can be linked to create an interconnected system, ensuring that when one alarm sounds, all alarms will sound. Each alarm in the interconnect-able system is equipped with an initiating alarm memory. In the event of an emergency, the smoke alarm that first detects a hazard will feature a flashing LED, allowing firefighters to locate the smoke source quickly and efficiently. All other alarms in the system will sound; however, their LEDs will not flash. This feature is especially useful in apartment buildings, condominiums, hotels, and dormitories. Silhouette’s Low-Profile Smoke Alarm will interconnect to a system containing a maximum of 18 Kidde devices, 12 of which can be smoke alarms.

Trademarked Hush Feature for Convenience
By pressing the Silhouette Low-Profile Smoke Alarm's Hush button, you can easily and safely silence nuisance alarms caused by non-emergency situations, such as overcooked dinners. This alarm's Smart Hush feature has the capability of temporarily desensitizing the alarm circuit for up to eight minutes. This feature is to be used only when a known alarm condition, such as smoke from cooking, activates the alarm.

The smoke alarm is desensitized by pushing the Test/Hush button on the smoke alarm cover. If the smoke is not too dense, the alarm will silence immediately. The red LED will illuminate for 1.5 seconds every eight seconds while in Hush mode. This indicates that the alarm is in a temporarily desensitized condition.

Additionally, the smoke alarm will automatically reset after approximately eight minutes and sound the alarm if particles of combustion are still present. Smart Hush can be used repeatedly until the air has been cleared of the condition causing the alarm. Pushing the Test/Hush button on the alarm will end the hush period.

Meets Industry Standards
Like all Kidde smoke alarms, the Silhouette Low-Profile alarm has been approved by the Underwriters Laboratories (UL), an independent third-party testing laboratory that sets the industry standard for smoke alarms.

5 out of 5 stars Where there is smoke, there is fire!   September 3, 2008

Most people know that it is important to replace the batteries in smoke alarms on a regular basis. If nothing else, the shrill beeping of an underpowered unit will cause that. But, did you know that the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) recommends replacing the detectors every ten years? That is because after that amount of time the probability of failure goes up, and failure during a fire can be catastrophic. This unit will sound an alarm after approximately ten years of service to let you know when it is time to replace it, which is such a good idea I wonder why it isn't in every detector. I suspect the answer is cost, as most detectors are sold by the case to home builders who are looking for the cheapest way to meet code, rather than the best way.

So if your smoke alarms are ten years old (or older), it is time to replace them. When you look around, you'll find that most of them are fairly inexpensive, and very similar to each other. Most of them (like this one) are the ionization type, which uses a very small bit of low level radioactive material to detect the presence of smoke. This type is best for quick, fast burning fires because they tend to put out less visible smoke. The other type use a light with a sensor. When smoke blocks the light from reaching the sensor, the alarm goes off. This type is far less common, and is best for slow, smoldering fires. The light sensors need regular vacuuming, as dust build up on the sensor can cause false alarms. By mixing the two types in a home, or by using units that have dual sensors, you'll be covered for all kinds of fires. Also, both of them will go off regardless of the fire type. The difference is in how quickly they will react to the smoke.

Finally, it is a good idea to buy one that has a hush feature. This is a mechanism that will turn off the alarm for a limited duration (say ten minutes) and then re-arm the detector. This prevents someone from disabling the alarm to silence a false alarm, and then forgetting to re-enable it. This detector has that feature, and it is easy enough to use (though does require a broom handle or similarly long item to reach it).

This smoke alarm has a sleek, low-profile design that looks good. It resembles a tiny version of a high-end bathroom fan (the kind without visible vents). It is very low-profile, and is only about five inches on a side, and a half-inch deep. The square shape fits in better with the rest of the home than a conventional round disc, while still retaining compatibility with the round electrical boxes used for smoke alarms in many homes. It comes with a pre-stripped wiring harness and a plastic ring that it locks to. Installation is easy if you are replacing an existing detector because the box and wiring will be there, and all you have to do is remove the old one, attach the wires together with wire nuts, attach the ring to the ceiling with the included screws, and lock the detector onto the ring. It is a fifteen minute job, and isn't hard. Just make sure the power is off before starting, as there are AC voltages running through the lines.

One of the best features of this detector is that it has a built-in rechargeable battery that will last ten years, the life of the detector. This saves countless trips up the ladder to replace old batteries, and makes It much more likely that the battery will work when it is needed. So, after installing this detector, you can ignore it for ten years other than an occasional cleaning. After the ten years are up, it will alert you to let you know it is time to replace it.

Recommended.

I just got my Kidde smoke alarm and I was a bit dubious of the claims made here, however, I can tell you they are pretty much spot on. If you are not familiar with electrical wiring, then I would recommend having an electrician do the job for you, but if there is a box where you want it, it should be a piece of cake. Please note this cannot be on a circuit with a ground fault interrupter. I would also point out that the only reason this is "low profile" is because it goes into the ceiling. However, this does look nice though. Also keep in mind you cannot paint this. Lastly, you should know that the bracket is mounted and the unit twists off, so if there is ever a problem, you can pull the unit out WITHOUT damaging the ceiling or any finished work. If you are looking for a hard wired smoke detector, look no further. This is a great product, and I highly recommend it.

Kidde Silhouette Hardwire Low Profile Smoke Alarm #KN-SMFM-i

The Kidde Low-Profile Smoke Alarm unit is sleek and very low profile, extending only 1/2 inch from the ceiling mount. So much nicer and less observable than the old ones that had begun to yellow.

This is a hard-wired model and requires an electrical box--either the square, round or octagonal box will work, but not the small rectangular one.

Added features:

The unit has an ionization sensor for best "fast flaming" fire protection, an alarm memory--a rapidly flashing LED to alert if alarm has sounded since the last test/reset button was used. (Test/reset button test's circuit's operation and resets memory after an alarm condition.)
Additional features: an LED with four modes of operation--standby, alarm, hush mode and memory set. Nicest of all, a sealed 120VAC rechargeable battery that lasts the life of the unit.

Estimated life of the Kidde Low-Profile Smoke Alarm is ten years.

Installation was easy. We had the correct electrical box in place, so no additional electrical wiring was needed. Make sure your box has 3 1/2" hole spacing and is at least 2 1/8" deep. The wire harness is pre-stripped, so the unit can be placed into use with ease. Installation took only fifteen minutes. Instructions say the unit can be interconnected with up to 24 total devices (12 smoke alarms and 6 heat or CO alarms). Once installed, Kidde recommends the device receive AC power for 24 hours to fully charge the battery and avoid low battery "chirp."

5 out of 5 stars Easy install, modern, low profile, flush look   August 16, 2008

I had a couple of those "eye sore" smoke detectors downstairs. They must have originally come with the house in 1992. Through the years, they started to turn a beige/yellow color and they simply stood out like a sore thumb in the hallway painted with fresh designer colors and bright white trim.

Solution? These flush mount, low profile alarms.

Before buying a couple of these, I took down one of my old alarms to see what kind of "junction box" they were installed in. Turns out I had plenty of space to work with as they used a standard octagon box. These will only work with square, octagon, 2-gang and some round junction boxes.

Once I had the new alarms in hand, installation took less than 10-minutes each. Turned off the power, grabbed my step-stool, removed the old alarm and base plate, connected the existing wires to the new harness (by color), installed the new plate, attached the harness and snapped and twisted the low profile alarm in place. Done.

The new smoke alarms looks fantastic. It actually reminds me of a high-end flush-mount ceiling speaker. You really don't even notice them. That was the goal from the get-go.

Pros:

- Easy installation
- Flush mount design
- Sealed, rechargeable battery
- 10-year warranty
- Smart Hush Button
- Quick connect harness
- Loud 85db alarm

Cons:

- Won't work with single-sized (rectangular) junction box
- Twice the price of typical alarms

Nice job Kidde. Highly recommeneded for anyone who "doesn't" want to notice their smoke alarms. :)

When we decided to remodel we had to put smoke detectors inside and outside every bedroom per city building codes. The detectors also had to be inter-connected to all sound if one went off. Based on recommendations we were given, we were looking at using a combination of ionizing (like this one) and photoelectric detectors to provide for a wider degree of protection. We decided to go with Kidde because of this detector. It is the only one we found that looks good in our modernized home.

We were able to use this detector to replace our older units. The Silhouette can fit in a square box, octagon box, round box or 2 gang box. It's electronics fit up into the junction box unlike most other detectors, thereby allowing it to have the slim profile. If your electrical box is really full of wires (which I am told by the electricians that they should never be for smoke detectors) you make have difficulty installing the silhouette. We did not run into any problems however. The Silhouette is 1 inch deep and only needs that depth in the box.

The Silhouette comes with a trim mounting ring and a 3 wire pigtail. Installation was easy. We already had 3 wire romex inter-connecting our existing detectors. We wired the pigtail in, screwed on the trim ring and connected the quick fittings. The Silhouette twists onto the trim ring to lock into place. If you don't have 3 wire then your detectors can't inter-connect and you may have to run new electrical wire.

There is "Push to Hush / Push To Test Weekly" button on the face of the detector with a Green LED above it. The green LED is suppose to light on the detector that initiated the alarm so you can diagnose any nuisance alarms. We haven't had any nuisance alarms. (knock on wood) The "Push To Hush" quiets the alarm for approx 10 mins. (hopefully enough time to get the burnt toast out of the oven) The appearance is unobtrusive and sleek. It is a standard white satin finish. You are not suppose to paint the detector. We have been really pleased with its profile.

The Silhouette features a built-in rechargeable battery that you never have to replace. This is a nice feature. I really like not having to replace those batteries yearly. However Kidde recommends cleaning the alarm yearly by removing it and using compressed air or vacuuming it. (especially if it nuisance sounds a lot). According to Kidde, approx 10 years after the alarm is first powered up it will enter error mode as indicated by the unit chirping and the green LED flashing RED every 30 seconds. When it reaches the end of its useful life it is suppose to discharge its battery so that it can be safely disposed of. It is stated that it can operate for up to one week on battery power alone. There is a disabling button under the back label that you can puncture and press to discharge the battery and render the detector permanently off prematurely.

I guess we will have to replace these detectors after 10 years. That's will cost some money. But who knows what will be out then. And this is an important feature of the safety of our family. I think it's worth it. I give this a high priority.
